Technical Specifications & Standards

Understanding the engineering behind high-performance waterproofing systems

ASTM Testing Standards

ASTM D412 - Tensile Properties

Measures tensile strength, elongation, and modulus of elastomeric waterproofing membranes. Typical values: 200-400 psi tensile strength, 300-500% elongation.

ASTM D4541 - Pull-Off Adhesion

Verifies bond strength between membrane and substrate. Minimum 200 psi required for most applications, with concrete failure preferred over adhesive failure.

ASTM C1202 - Chloride Ion Penetration

Critical for parking structures exposed to de-icing salts. Measures concrete's resistance to chloride penetration. Crystalline systems can reduce permeability by 60-90%.

ASTM C836 - Cold Liquid-Applied Elastomeric

Specification for cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membranes. Covers material properties, application requirements, and performance criteria.

Hydrostatic Pressure Ratings

Understanding Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is the force exerted by water at rest. It increases with depth at approximately 0.433 psi per foot. A 10-foot deep foundation experiences ~4.3 psi, while a 50-foot deep structure faces ~21.5 psi.

Pressure Calculation:

Pressure (psi) = 0.433 × Depth (feet)

Example: 30 ft depth = 13 psi hydrostatic pressure

System Pressure Ratings

  • Light Duty (50-100 psi): Shallow foundations, planters, above-grade applications
  • Medium Duty (100-200 psi): Standard foundations, parking structures, elevator pits
  • Heavy Duty (200-300+ psi): Deep foundations, tunnels, water treatment facilities, dams

Vapor Permeance & Moisture Control

Vapor permeance measures a material's ability to allow water vapor to pass through. Measured in perms (grains per hour per square foot per inch of mercury). Lower perms = better moisture barrier.

Permeance Classifications:

  • Vapor Impermeable: <0.1 perms (most waterproofing membranes)
  • Vapor Semi-Impermeable: 0.1-1.0 perms
  • Vapor Semi-Permeable: 1.0-10 perms
  • Vapor Permeable: >10 perms

Why Vapor Permeance Matters:

  • Prevents moisture vapor transmission through concrete slabs
  • Critical for occupied spaces and moisture-sensitive flooring
  • Protects against efflorescence and concrete degradation
  • Maintains indoor air quality and prevents mold growth

Industrial Applications

Specialized waterproofing solutions for diverse commercial and industrial environments

Parking Structures

Multi-level parking garages require robust waterproofing to prevent chloride intrusion from de-icing salts and protect structural steel. Traffic-bearing membranes with high abrasion resistance.

Below-Grade Foundations

Foundation walls and slabs exposed to groundwater and hydrostatic pressure. Positive-side crystalline or sheet membrane systems provide long-term protection against water infiltration.

Water Treatment Plants

Potable water tanks, wastewater basins, and clarifiers require NSF-61 certified waterproofing systems that resist continuous water immersion and chemical exposure.

Secondary Containment

Chemical storage areas, fuel depots, and industrial facilities require impermeable barriers to prevent environmental contamination. Systems must meet EPA 40 CFR 112 requirements.

Plaza Decks & Rooftops

Occupied roof decks over interior spaces require waterproofing that accommodates structural movement, drainage, and pedestrian traffic while protecting the building envelope.

Tunnels & Underground Structures

Transportation tunnels, utility corridors, and underground facilities face extreme hydrostatic pressure and require robust waterproofing with long service life and minimal maintenance.
